Not all rituals are serious. Some of the most powerful ones are surprisingly small. A morning coffee before writing. An evening walk with a camera. Saturday afternoons spent painting. A Sunday garden routine.

There is a strange myth about midlife. That by this stage, most of the important choices have already been made. Career chosen. Family established. Routines settled. Identity fixed.

Children create without hesitation. They draw pictures with wild colours, sing loudly without embarrassment and build strange inventions from cardboard boxes with absolute conviction. They do not stop to ask whether it is good. They simply begin.

Playfulness is often treated as something we outgrow. Children play. Adults work. That seems to be the unspoken agreement. Yet the longer I live, the more convinced I become that playfulness becomes increasingly important as we age. Not less.
