If you spend enough time reading books about personal growth, you could be forgiven for thinking that transformation arrives in a dramatic burst of inspiration. Somebody has a life-changing realisation.

There is a particular kind of confidence that seems to arrive somewhere in midlife. It doesn't arrive dramatically. There are no fireworks, no ceremonies and certainly no official notification informing you that you've reached a new level of wisdom.

I once heard somebody describe fear as an overprotective relative who means well but has terrible judgment. The description has stayed with me because it feels remarkably accurate.
