Why Playfulness Gets More Important with Age

Why Playfulness Gets More Important with Age

June 17, 20261 min read

Playfulness is often treated as something we outgrow.

Children play.

Adults work.

That seems to be the unspoken agreement.

Yet the longer I live, the more convinced I become that playfulness becomes increasingly important as we age.

Not less.

A friend of mine in his sixties recently bought a cheap second-hand guitar. He had no ambition to perform, no plan to master it and very little natural ability.

He simply thought it might be fun.

That word stood out.

Fun.

It had been missing from his life for quite some time.

The older I get, the more I notice how serious adulthood can become. Responsibilities accumulate. Schedules tighten. Decisions carry weight.

Over time, many people become efficient but heavy.

Productive but joyless.

Playfulness interrupts that.

It lightens the load.

What fascinates me is how often playfulness leads to creativity, connection and curiosity. A silly idea can become a hobby. A playful conversation can deepen a friendship. A spontaneous decision can create lasting memories.

Play keeps life flexible.

Midlife often needs this flexibility because routine can harden if we’re not careful. Days become predictable. Weeks blur together.

Play introduces surprise.

Novelty.

Movement.

Perhaps this is why playful adults often seem younger than their years.

Not because they are avoiding reality.

Because they remain engaged with it.

Lightly.

Curiously.

With a willingness to experiment.

And that may be one of the healthiest ways to move through life.

Rock Your Midlife Takeaway

Playfulness isn’t childish. It’s one of the most powerful ways to keep life light, curious and energising as you grow older.
