Why Making Things Matters More Than Ever

Why Making Things Matters More Than Ever

We live in a world where most things arrive finished.

Meals can be delivered.

Furniture can be assembled by someone else.

Entertainment is streamed instantly.

Answers appear within seconds.

Convenience has become one of modern life’s greatest achievements.

And yet, for all its benefits, something important can get lost.

The satisfaction of making.

A friend of mine took up woodworking after retiring. Before that, his life had been spent almost entirely behind a desk. Meetings, emails and spreadsheets had shaped most of his career. His work had been important, but intangible.

At the end of a day, there was often little he could physically point to.

Then he built his first small table.

It was imperfect.

Slightly uneven.

One leg wobbled.

But he loved it.

Not because it was beautiful.

Because he had made it.

The older I get, the more I appreciate how deeply satisfying it is to create something tangible. There is something grounding about taking raw materials — wood, paint, clay, fabric, ingredients, words — and turning them into something that didn’t exist before.

It reminds us that we can shape the world.

Even in small ways.

What fascinates me is how making things changes our relationship with time. When you create, time behaves differently. Hours pass unnoticed. Attention narrows. The outside world fades.

Psychologists call this flow.

Most of us simply call it losing ourselves in something.

And losing yourself, occasionally, is a healthy thing.

Midlife can be the perfect time to rediscover this because by now many people are hungry for something more tactile, more real. After years of abstract work and digital overload, creating with your hands can feel almost rebellious.

Slow.

Physical.

Present.

Perhaps that’s why making things matters more than ever.

Not because the world needs another scarf, painting or birdhouse.

But because you might need the process of making it.

And that may be the greater gift.

Rock Your Midlife Takeaway
